Tap-to-call: make your phone number a button
On a phone, a number that is only text has to be copied or remembered. A tap-to-call link dials it. For a business that lives on calls, it's the cheapest fix there is.
Written October 7, 2026, from the sources listed at the bottom. Where a rule comes from Google, Google's page is the final word.
Check yours in ten seconds
Open your website on your phone and tap your phone number. If the phone offers to call, you're done. If nothing happens, the number is plain text.
When we checked ten Houston-area auto repair websites by hand in October 2026, two of the nine that loaded had a phone number that couldn't be tapped.
What the fix is
A phone link is an ordinary web link that starts with tel: followed by the number. Whoever looks after your site can add one in a few minutes:
<a href="tel:+17135550100">(713) 555-0100</a>
That number is a made-up example. On a cell phone the link dials; on a computer it opens whatever calling program is installed.
Where to put it
- At the top of every page, not only the contact page.
- In a bar that stays on screen on phones.
- Next to your hours, so people can see you're open before they call.
